Books, have always fascinated me right from childhood, from Enid Blyton, Ruskin Bond to Agatha Christie to our very own MT and SK Pottekkad, each one I have read has helped me to mould into this individual that I am today. I don’t remember who introduced me to the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling, might be someone from college. By the time I read the first book, ”The Philosopher's Stone”, four books and the first movie was already out. It was this altogether different world I was sucked into, I still remember waiting patiently to read the fifth book, “The Order of the Phoenix” taken from one of my hostel mates in 2003. I have seen every Potter movie barring the first in theatres. I am sure there are plenty of Potterheads like me who are unabashed fans of this world JK Rowling has set up.
Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return To Hogwarts review and release date
HBO is making it a habit of these reunions, it was “Friends” last year, and now they have come up with the 20th anniversary of the Harry Potter film franchise. Now, this is not an official review of the same, I am just writing my thoughts and perspective from the angle of a Harry Potter fan.
For muggles like us, everything in the wizarding world is mesmerizing, to say the least. From Platform 9 ¾ at Kings Cross to the steam train to the Hogwarts castle premises to Diagon Alley to these mythical creatures to what not! This reunion is more of a trip down memory lane for the fans and for the cast and crew of the Harry Potter series. Four directors worked on the series, namely Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell, and David Yates, and the reunion focus on each one’s vision plus the herculean effort of producer David Heyman towards making this franchise a highly successful one.
Of course, the reunion also tracks the journey of the franchise’s main three leads, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger respectively. All three were picked through a nationwide scout and auditions. So were the rest of the children, be it Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom), James & Oliver Phelps (The Weasley twins), Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasely), Alfred Enoch (Dean Thomas), Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood), etc. All of the above-mentioned people plus the main cast of the series, be it Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), Ralph Fiennes (Voldermort), Gary Oldman (Sirius Black), Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange), Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy), etc. makes an appearance in this reunion. There were notable missings as well, Sir Michael Gambon (Dumbledore), Maggie Smith (Minerva McGonagall) to name a few.
There were a lot among the cast who is no more with us, be it Richard Harris who played Dumbledore in the first two films, Alan Rickman who played Severus Snape fantastically well, Richard Griffiths who played Vernon Dursley, Helen McCrory who played Narcissa Malfoy etc. The reunion pays tribute to all the cast and crew who left for heavenly abode.
Ultimately, “Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return To Hogwarts” is a nostalgic trip back through each of the movies in the franchise. It’s just 100 minutes long, so haven’t included a lot of things I wished to have in it. Like the stories from the production design side (although a small insight was given on the Quidditch field) or the composition of the Potter tunes, instead, the reunion focuses more on the stories from the directors and the cast.
But, at last, when that last pack up is announced and the three main casts are shown in an emotional huddle, it will leave a lump in your throat. But the makers turn the mood quickly by showing the footage of the trio on their first day of the shoot.
Must watch for all Potterheads, normal muggles please don’t bother!
